Ngāti Rehua is a hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngātiwai. Aotea (Great Barrier Island) is the ancestral land of the Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea hapū. Our people are tangata whenua and are mana whenua of Aotea, Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) the Pokohinu Islands (Mokohinau Islands), Rakitū (Arid Island), Rangiahua (Flat Island) and other outlying islands and rocky outcrops.
As a formally constituted conservation Trust, we are committed to protecting Te Hauturu-o-Toi Little Barrier Island as a nature reserve of international importance; contributing to the protection of the island's endangered, threatened, or rare species of flora and fauna, and by supporting scientific research and survey of the island and its biotic communities.
Since it was founded 1997, the Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) Supporters' Trust has played a significant part in the preservation of Hauturu as an internationally important Nature Reserve.
On Hauturu, since the early 1990’s, DOC has run an intensive captive management programme for Little Barrier tuatara, so as to provide for their future release into the natural environment.
The Trust's primary objective is to contribute to the preservation of the indigenous values of the island and the realisation of its full potential as a wildlife sanctuary.
Our weekends are a happy mix of voluntary work (on Saturday) and walking, bird-watching, botanising, even swimming or fishing (on Sunday).
The Trust raises funds to assist selected projects on the island. It is also helping to educate the public on conservation issues pertinent to the island.
The Maori name 'Te Hauturu-o-Toi', translates as ‘resting place of the wind’.
